Maudi Darrell as Victoria Siddons

(photo: S. Elwin Neame, London, 1907/1908)

This real photograph postcard of Maudi Darrell (daughter of Hugh J. Didcott and Rose Fox) as Victoria Siddons in The Gay Gordons, is no. 3459 E in the Philco Series published in 1907 or 1908 by The Philco Publishing Co, London. The part of Victoria Siddons had been created by Zena Dare when The Gay Gordon was first produced at the Aldwych Theatre, London, on 11 September 1907. Miss Darrell also played Victoria Siddons during the London run and again on the UK tour during 1908, with Zena Dare in the lead as Peggy Quainton, the role which had been created in London by Ellaline Terriss.

An unsigned MS note on the reverse of this postcard reads as follows:
'Ivy & I saw this one when we saw Miss Zena Dare in the Gay Gordons at Hanley March 17th 1908. The play started Monday March 16th & lasted all the week out. This was the one that changed clothes with Zena Dare. This is a very good photo of her. This is Zena Dare's Hat that she had when they changed. Miss Dare took ''Peggy Quainton'' in the play.'
