Although Gabrielle Ray had been on the stage since the age of 10 in 1893, she made her first West End success as Thisbe in The Orchid, a musical comedy with which the new Gaiety Theatre, Strand, opened on 26 October 1903. Thereafter she was in constant demand by photographers and postcard publishers until her marriage and temporary retirement from the theatre in 1911.
