images of theatre and other popular entertainment
This carte de visite photograph of an actor in the role of Orpheus in Offenbach's successful 'opéra-bouffon' Orphée aux Enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld) is identified as Marchand. The piece was first produced at the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens, Paris, on 21 October 1858 when the part of Orpheus was played by Tayau. Other members of the cast included Désiré as Jupiter, Marchand as Morphée, Coralie Geoffroy as Cupidon and Marie Garnier as Vénus. There is a lithograph print, however (reproduced in Antonio de Almeida, editor, Offenbach's Songs from the Great Operettas), which features four full length portraits, probably after photographs, of characters from Orphée aux Enfers, which are described as members of the original cast. These are Mr. Marchand as Orphée, Mr. Désiré as Jupiter, Melle. Garnier as Vénus and Melle. Gervais as Cupidon. Pending further research, it seems likely that Marchand succeeded Tayau as Orpheus in Paris. His presence in the part in Berlin, however, has yet to be explained.
