FOOTLIGHT NOTES

1850s-1920s

Lyric Theatre, London
front of Lyric Theatre, London, programme,
in late 1888/early 1889 after B.C. Stephenson and Alfred Cellier's
highly successful comic opera, Dorothy was running after having been transferred from
the Gaiety (where the piece was first produced on 25 September 1886) and the Prince of Wales's

(lithograph printed by David Allen & Sons, London and Belfast, 1888/89)

The original stars of Dorothy when the piece opened at the Gaiety Theatre, London, on 25 September 1886, were Marie Tempest as Dorothy Bantam and Hayden Coffin as Harry Sherwood. The latter was still playing Sherwood, opposite Effie Chapuy as Dorothy Bantam, at the time that this programme was printed. This production of Dorothy was the first piece to be staged at the new Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, upon its opening on 17 December 1888.

The curtain-raiser on this occasion, a vaudeville in one act by B.C. Stephenson, with music by Ivan Caryll and Henry J. Leslie entitled Warranted Burglar-Proof, was first performed at the Prince of Wales's on 31 March 1888.
