FOOTLIGHT NOTES

1850s-1920s

Lily Elsie

colour lithograph music sheet cover for Pedro de Zulueta's 'Sonia' valse,
with a full-length portrait of
Lily Elsie (1886-1962), English actress and singer, star of musical comedy

There is little doubt that Miss Elsie, although here unidentified by the publishers of this cover,
was chosen as the subject of the illustration because she had become so celebrated in the public mind as
Sonia, the leading role in the English production of The Merry Widow,
which was first produced at Daly's Theatre, London, on 8 June 1907.

(published by Chappell & Co Ltd, London, New York and Melbourne, 1910;
the portrait after a photograph by Foulsham & Banfield, London, probably 1909)
