Ellaline Terriss, playing Bessie Brent, sang Leslie Stuart's 'Lousiana Lou' in The Shop Girl during its run at the Gaiety Theatre, London. The part, written for Miss Terriss but who had to retire because of illness, had been originated by Ada Reeve when the show opened at that theatre on 24 November 1894. Ellaline Terriss recorded 'Lousiana Lou' several times: for the G&T label (3441 and 3457) in 1903 and for HMV (C-2432) in 1932.
