Peggy O'Neil's first appearance in England was under contract to Robert Courtneidge when she took the part of Paddy in Paddy the Next Best Thing, a play by W. Gayer-Mackay and Robert Ord based on Gertrude Page's novel. After an initial run at the Queen's Theatre, Manchester, the play opened at the Savoy Theatre, London, on 5 April 1920, where it ran successfully for 867 performances.
