The Drury Lane pantomime of the 1898/99 season was The Forty Thieves by Arthur Sturgess and Arthur P. Collins. Opening on 26 December 1898 for a run of 130 performances, its cast was headed by Dan Leno as Abdallah, Herbert Campbell as the Fair Zuleika and the popular Australian actress, Nellie Stewart as Ganem. Other favourites in smaller parts were Johnny Danvers, Whimsical Walker (as Clown), Rita Prestano and Daisy Stratton.
