Basil Hallam created the character of Gilbert, the Filbert for The Passing Show, the original revue of that title, produced at the Palace Theatre, London, on 20 April 1914. He recorded the accompanying song, 'Gilbert, the Filbert,' for the HMV label (4-2468, B-481) at Hayes, Middlesex, on 4 June 1914.
